Deanna Mitchell, director of the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, will speak on the role of the Airmen during World War II. Lt. Col. Herbert Carter will share his experiences as a Tuskegee Airman in the segregated U.S. Army during the second World War.
The Jackson Person & Associates design encompassed the new visitor center, parking, and visitor bus route to the site, while The Jaeger Company designed the actual airfield space to reflect landscape from the Tuskegee Airmen training time period. HARTRAMPF engineers, architects, and historic preservation professionals partnered their efforts with architects from Brown Chambless Architects to complete the design development of each of the 13 buildings on the site. The Jackson Design Group produced the preliminary exhibit design, and Gulf States Engineering provided Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) review. S.A. Williams, Inc. compiled cost estimates for each design submittal and monitored the budget throughout the life of the project.
Russell Davis, president of the Tuskegee Airmen Incorporated said the actual gold medal, awarded to the original airmen, will be housed at the Smithsonian Institute. The more than 200 airmen who participated in the ceremony received free replicas. Davis said because no one has ever been able to count the exact number of Tuskegee airmen, it is unknown how many more there are.
Marable has been a volunteer at the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site for more than three years. Every Saturday he conducts orientation tours for visitors. He ... developed the Site’s first Junior Ranger program. In addition, Marable created the Tuskegee Student Betterment Council at Booker T. Washington High School. This organization helps students improve academic performance and encourages community service. He also volunteers with the Tuskegee Area Chamber of Commerce and the George Washington Carver Arts and Crafts Festival.
The crowd, the cheers and the applause in the United States Capitol Rotunda belied the segregationist homecoming that the Tuskegee Airmen received 60 years ago. The bestowing of the Congressional Gold Medal upon the Black air core was viewed as a 21st century stride for racial progress and an inspiration to fight for justice.
