The Tuskegee Airmen flew their last mission of WWII on 30 April 1945. They were credited with 111 enemy aircraft destroyed in the air and 150 on the ground. They were ... credited with the sinking of an enemy destroyer using only machine gun fire. They were also awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation for operations over Germany on 24 March 1945.

Haulman told the Advertiser he had discovered the claim that the Tuskegee Airmen had never lost a bomber they escorted to enemy fire first appeared on March 24, 1945, in an article in the black newspaper Chicago Defender. The newspaper's headline read "332nd Flies Its 200th Mission Without Loss."

On June 2, 1943, Lt. Col. Davis led the Tuskegee Airmen in their first combat mission, strafing targets on Pantelleria Island. A month later, Lt. Charles B. Hall scored the 99th's first victory. On his eighth mission, he shot down an FW-190 -- one of Germany's best fighters. At the time, the 99th flew obsolete Curtiss P-40s.

Ottumwa native Captain Robert Williams flew 50 combat missions and later wrote the original manuscript for the award winning 1995 HBO film "The Tuskegee Airmen" with his character portrayed by actor Laurence Fishburne. Captain Williams' P-51D Mustang named "Duchess Arlene" wore number 10 and is the featured paint scheme showing two enemy aircraft kills.
