Turtles are frequently hit by cars while crossing roads. If you see a turtle crossing the road please help it across. First, make sure that it's safe to help (do not endanger yourself or others by walking into heavy traffic). Move the turtle in the direction that it is traveling (this is not necessarily toward the water). Turtles know where they are going and will turn around and march right back into traffic if you return them to the side of the road they came from.

Once, there were tens of millions of green sea turtles around the world. Now there may be fewer than 200,000 mature females. In Hawaiian waters, the green sea turtle is making a comeback from its threatened status. Due to their size and swiftness in the water, they have only two predators, sharks and people. Human impact includes exploitation, poaching, subsistence hunting, incidental catch, marine debris and habitat destruction.

American box turtles are widespread throughout the eastern, central and southwestern United States and in the northern parts of Mexico. They are partially aquatic turtles that spend the greater part of their time on dry land within easy range of shallow fresh water. You may want to take a side trip to Raccoon Hollow to play the Box Turtle Games housed there.

Those who already keep their aquatic turtles indoors may need to re-check temperatures and adjust your water heater thermostats. Some RES may exhibit behavioral and appetite changes due to the winter season. Do not let water temperatures become too cold.

The proposed critical habitat, comprising roughly 200,000 square miles of ocean, is thought to be one of the most important foraging areas in the world for leatherback turtles, which feed on this area’s dense clusters of jellyfish. These waters are currently closed to drift-gillnet fishing for swordfish during the summer and fall when leatherbacks gather there to feed.

Although the sale of small turtles is now illegal in the United States, some species may make simple pets. Water turtles, such as the spotted, painted, and musk turtles, may be kept in an aquarium, but they must have a rock onto which they can crawl out of the water to dry and sun themselves. Land turtles, such as the box and wood turtles, need to take an occasional dip.
