Turtles: Eggs
built 290 days ago
Sea turtles are almost entirely aquatic and instead of feet they have flippers. Sea turtles "fly" through the water, using the up-and-down motion of the front flippers to generate thrust; the back feet are not used for propulsion but may be used as rudders for steering. Compared with freshwater turtles, sea turtles have very limited mobility on land, and apart from the dash from the nest to the sea as hatchlings, male sea turtles normally never leave the sea. Females must come back onto land to lay eggs. They move very slowly and laboriously, dragging themselves forwards with their flippers. The back flippers are used to dig the burrow and then fill it back with sand once the eggs have been deposited.

Occasionally, female turtles will lay their eggs in a yard or driveway. This happens most often in May and June. Don't be alarmed. There is no need to artificially incubate the eggs or move them. Try not to disturb the female turtle and she will leave when finished.

Lit by torches and candles at night, the solar-powered Hotelito Desconocido is set on an estuary and in July, sea turtles come to the beach to lay their eggs. One TripAdvisor traveler wrote, "At night the hotel is illuminated with thousands of candles making it romantic and interesting."

The large body cavity ... enables the female turtles to produce and hold a large volume of eggs. Female sea turtles are also capable of storing live sperm for several years, although fertility decreases over time. This enables the female to fertilize numerous clutches of eggs without having to mate.

Sea turtles lay their eggs on dry, sandy beaches. Immature sea turtles are not cared for by the adults. Most are endangered largely as a result of beach development and over harvesting.
