Turn It Up An emotionally charged film, "Turn It Up" is a contemporary drama about urban life and the importance of following your dreams. The film teams international hip hop star Prakazrel "Pras" Michel (Mystery Men), with the exciting new rapper Ja-Rule in his feature film debut. The film is written and directed by Robert Adetuyi, a screenwriter making his feature film directorial debut.

In keeping with its hushed Wednesday release, debut director Robert Adetyui's Turn It Up is better left hovering under most moviegoers' radar. It's hard to say if even devoted Fugees refugees will be able to stomach the mediocrity plaguing this loose autobiography of the Ghetto Superstar himself, ex-Fugee Prakazrel "Pras" Michel.

If Paris's musical career resembles anyone's at all, it's latter-day 50 Cent. "Turn It Up" is essentially the next G-Unit single. The track, produced by the elegantly retarded Scott Storch, features her catchphrase "That's hot" (much like 50's "It's 50") in the opening seconds and dabbles in G-Unit's static mediocrity. Careening synths, triple-tracked vocals, symphonic progressions that end in reliably predictable crescendos-- it's all there. But people are going to like it. Storch is stunningly capable of muting his formidable skills for the price of chart success, and he's frank about that. Surely he realizes... that his bid to turn a shipping heir's former dog toy into Madonna (clearly the end game here) is an unworkable situation. He may be distracted by all the adamantium anchors he's selecting for his yacht.
cover art Save for some decent darkly-urban cinematography by Hubert Taczanowski and a brief appearance by singer Faith Evans, Turn It Up is a bit of a stiff. Its hackneyed story concerns an aspiring hiphop artist whose attempts to cut a record and get out the hood are blocked by white thugs and his best friend’s mistakes. You know, it’s the kind of movie that gets you thinking about your grocery list or what you’re missing on TV while you’re watching it.
