The sudden outbreak of many cases among humans in Turkey might suggest the virus had in fact been circulating in birds for some time, suggests a WHO expert. Reports of H5N1 in turkeys in Turkey first emerged in October 2005. Given the known number of bird outbreaks, the 14 human cases since then appears disproportionately high, notes Klaus Stőhr, coordinator of WHO’s influenza programme. In east Asia, where there have been many bird outbreaks, there have been 142 human cases of H5N1 since 2003.
The WHO is trying to work out why it has spread so quickly in Turkey. The deaths were the first outside South-East Asia, where more than 70 have died since last 2003.
The male turkey in full plumage is dignified and almost royal in appearance. As his dance begins, the body stiffens and he gobbles loudly holding his head high, piercing black eyes looking straight ahead. His huge chest is thrust forward. Each feather stands apart with his tail feathers fanned. His wings actually drape down and drag the ground as he stamps his spurred feet. Moving in a circle around the barnyard for all to seen.
To this day, Dillon, who was born on Thanksgiving Day and ... felt preordained to be the Gobbler, prefers the long-necked suit because it looked more like a turkey. Virginia Tech football coach and athletic director Bill Dooley, who was hired in 1978, agreed that it did--and didn't like it. He heard the story about the nickname originating from athletes' eating habits and didn't think it conveyed a fitting image. Dooley began changing that image by removing the gobbling sound from the scoreboard and bringing back the turn-of-the-century nickname "the Hokies."
Turkey's Health Ministry said Tuesday that preliminary tests had detected the deadly strain in yet another child, who was hospitalized Jan. 12 in the eastern city of Erzurum. It said the 4 1/2-year-old, whose gender was not immediately released, came from Dogubayazit _ the hometown of all four of the children who so far have died.

Whether you are pre-stuffing, slow baking, frying, or storing, your holiday meal could be jeopardized by the way you handle your turkey. According to hotline staff members, there are five basic problems that they hear continually each year.
