Turkey at a Crossroads Now the struggle in Turkey is between politicians from that traditional, pious middle class, and the elite bureaucracy that has steered the state since its beginnings. Critics of the state say Turkey has outgrown the need for the military to intervene in politics. Its supporters say politicians cannot be trusted to keep Islam out of the running of the state. -- Sabrina Tavernise, July 19, 2007
The largest lake in Turkey is Van Gölü (Lake Van), located in eastern Anatolia. The waters of Van Gölü are saline, as are those of another large body of water, Lake Tuz, located near the center of the Anatolian Plateau. Freshwater lakes include Beyşehir, Eğridir, and Burdur—all located in the southwest.

Because of its strategic location astride two continents, Turkey's culture has a unique blend of Eastern and Western tradition. A powerful regional presence in the Eurasian landmass with strong cultural and economic influence in the area between the European Union in the west and Central Asia in the east, Russia in the north and the Middle East in the south, Turkey has come to acquire increasing strategic significance.[4][5]
Around 90 percent of Turkey's oil supplies are imported, mainly from the Middle East (Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Syria) and Russia. Turkey's port of Ceyhan is a major outlet for Iraqi oil exports, with optimal pipeline capacity from Iraq of about 1.5-1.6 million bbl/d, but oil flows have been only sporadic since late March 2003, following the outbreak of the Iraq war. On March 8, 2004, Iraq issued a tender for Kirkuk oil via the Turkish port of Ceyhan, the first such sale from Iraq's northern oil fields in a year. Since then, flows through Ceyhan have been erratic as the Baku-Ceyhan line has been subject to frequent attacks.

Turkey acts as an important link in the East-West Southern Energy Corridor bringing Caspian, Central Asian, and Middle Eastern energy to Europe and world markets. The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which came online in July 2006, delivers 1 million b/d of petroleum, and in 2007, the South Caucasus Pipeline (from Shah Deniz) started bringing natural gas from Azerbaijan to Turkey. Turkey's interconnector pipeline to Greece, an important step in bringing Caspian natural gas to Europe via Turkey, came online in November 2007.
