built 634 days ago
Tupac Sshakur Tupac Shakur was shot four times in the chest as he rode in a car driven by Suge Knight on Sept. 7, 1996. He and Knight had attended a boxing match between Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon at Las Vegas's MGM Grand Hotel and were on their way to a party at Knight's Las Vegas club when the shooting occurred. Just before they left the MGM Grand, Shakur, Knight, and their entourage from Death Row Records were involved in a fist-fight with Orlando Anderson, a reputed member of Knight's alleged rivals, the Crips. No one really knows how the altercation started, but it was captured on hotel security cameras. Shakur and Knight left after hotel security guards stopped the melee.

The first album after Tupac's "death" was released in November of 1996: Makaveli: Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory. The title aroused some curious glances from those who knew Shakur. The first part of the title refers to Niccol Machiavelli, an old-school Italian philosopher who believed the faking one's own death was a sure way to foil his enemies. Machiavelli's two most famous books, Discorsi dopra la prima deca di Tito Livio (Life With Tito) and Il Principe (Ill Communication) were both written well after his death. Some wonder if Tupac's reference wasn't a signal to the world that things were not as they seemed.

On September 7, 1996, Tupac Shakur attended the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon boxing match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. After the boxing match, Shakur spotted 21 year-old Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, a member of the Southside Crips in the MGM Grand lobby. Shakur rushed him and knocked Anderson down, and Shakur's entourage beat him. The incident was captured on the hotel's video surveillance. Anderson and a group of Crips had beaten up a member of Death Row's entourage in a Foot Locker a few weeks earlier, precipitating Shakur's attack. After the fight with Anderson, Shakur met up with Suge Knight to go to Death Row-owned Club 662 (now known as restaurant/club Seven).

Tupac bounced around along the East, in New York City and Baltimore, before moving to Marin County, California when he was 17.  Here, Tupac made friends who helped spark his interest in rap music.  He made friends with Ray Luv, and together they started a rap group called Strictly Dope. Their neighborhood shows brought Tupac enough acclaim to land an audition with Shock G. of Digital Underground.  In 1990 Shakur joined Digital Underground although it wasn’t until he became a solo artist, when he became more recognized.
