Tupac Shakur Infamous 25-year-old gangsta rapper and actor Tupac Shakur was shot and killed before he had a chance to fulfill the promise of a successful career in both fields. He was born in New York City and his mother Afeni Shakur was a member of the Black Panther Party. Shakur spent much of his youth in Oakland, CA, where he first gained notice as a rapper in 1991 with the group Digital Underground. Later that year, he released a solo album, 2Pacalypse Now that earned both notoriety and acclaim from fans of the genre. Shakur began his acting career in the late '80s with an appearance on the television series A Different World. He made his feature film debut in 1992 with the film Juice and followed it up co-starring with Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice in 1993.

In the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine (issue #746, with Tupac Shakur on the cover) is a free five-minute Rolling Stone phonecard. The front of the card is the cover of Rolling Stone double issue #738/739, with Jenny McCarthy of MTV. It is attached to a small piece of card stock with more information on the card. It is a five-minute card, and is rechargeable by credit card. Time is provided by Frontier Communications, and the card is distributed through Nu Tel Worldwide Communications (NYC). The card has an exposed PIN number, and expires 9/1/97.

Tupac Shakur had a tremendous influence and is a powerful figure in society. The messages he addressed are as loud today as they were before his untimely demise. This course will grasp an understanding of Tupac's message by going beyond the misinterpretations of the media and exploring the dual persona that existed within Tupac himself as a poet and activist. The socio-economic condition of his environment as well as his position in society as an African American male (and its implications) will be evaluated. Emphasis will be placed on analyzing his poetry, songs, roles in film, and complimented by readings and guest speakers.

Tupac Shakur Biography In addition to rapping, Tupac began acting in films. His first starring role was in the 1992 movie Juice as Bishop a trigger happy teen, in which he was hailed by Rolling Stone's Peter Travers as "the film's most magnetic figure." He went on to star in Poetic Justice (with Janet Jackson), Above the Rim, Gridlock'd (with Tim Roth), Bullet, and Gang Related. He had ... been slated to star in the Hughes brothers' Menace II Society but was replaced by Larenz Tate after assaulting the directors. Director John Singleton claimed that he wrote the film Baby Boy with Shakur in mind for the leading role. It was eventually filmed with Tyrese Gibson in his place and released in 2001, five years after Shakur's death. The movie features a mural of Shakur in the protagonist's bedroom as well as featuring "Hail Mary" in the movie's score.

In 1984 Tupac moved to Baltimore, Maryland. For his sophomore year of high school Tupac was accepted to the Baltimore School for the Arts. Even at this age, Shakur was outspoken on the subject of racial equality. He was an avid reader, delving into books about eastern religions, and even entire encyclopedia sets. Shielding his love of literature from his peers, he gained the respect of Baltimore kids by acting like a tough guy. Shakur composed his first rap in Baltimore under the name "MC New York".

In order to get through the hard times he started out writing love songs and poetry, and ... participating in many aspects of theatre. He finally fell into rap in Baltimore, writing lyrics and staging his New York background.Tupacs first break came with a group called "Digital Underground" who was known funkadelic beats and hard bass. After he broke away from Digital Underground he had record breaking success. Dropping unbelievable records and starring in great films like "juice". Tupac's death came at the apex of his career, he was shot and eventually died on December 13, 1996.
