Tunisia: French Consulate

The first people known to history in what is now Tunisia were the Berbers. Numerous civilizations have invaded, migrated to, and been assimilated into the population over the millennia, with significant influxes of population via conquest and settlement from Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Arabs, Ottoman Turks, and French, to cite some significant sources. Additionally, after the Reconquista and expulsion of non-Christians and Moriscos from Spain, many Spanish Moors and Jews ... arrived at the end of the 15th century.
Tunisia is a reflection of the many cultures that have inhabited it, from its indigenous Berbers, to Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Ottomans and the French, to name a few. In addition, the warmth of the people is found throughout the country.

General Patton (left) confers with General Eisenhower at the beginning of the II Corps offensive. During late February and early March Allied units in Tunisia increased their combat power. Two fresh British divisions arrived and the British 6th Armoured Division refitted with American Sherman tanks. The French XIX Corps turned in its prewar equipment for the latest American weapons. The U.S. II Corps received the rest of the 1st, 9th, and 34th Infantry Division components from Algeria and replaced lost tanks and equipment as fast as ships, trains, and trucks could bring them to the front. Engineer and other support specialists improved and expanded ports, rail lines, and roads. Best of all for the troops on the ground, Allied air support soon improved.
MEDICAL FACILITIES AND HEALTH INFORMATION:Medical care in Tunisia is adequate, with a number of new, private “polyclinics” available that function as simple hospitals and can provide a variety of procedures. Specialized care or treatment may not be available. Facilities that can handle complex trauma cases are virtually non-existent. While most private clinics have a few physicians who are fluent in English, the medical establishment uses French and all of the ancillary staff in every clinic communicates in Arabic and/or French. Public hospitals are overcrowded, under-equipped and understaffed. In general, nursing care does not conform to U.S. standards.
Tunisia's legal system is based on the French civil law system and to a lesser degree Islamic law; the country has both civil and criminal courts. However, the judiciary is not completely independent from executive influence.
Map/Still Tunisia's culture is highly diverse, in part because of long periods of Ottoman and then French rule but ... because populations of Jews and Christians have lived among a Muslim majority for centuries. Similarly, the capital, Tunis, blends ancient Arab souks and mosques and modern-style office buildings into one of the most handsome and lively cities in the region. Other cities include Sfax (Safaqis), Sousse (Susah), and Gabès (Qabis) on the fertile coast and Kairouan (Al-Qayrawan) and El-Kef (Al-Kaf) in the arid interior.
