Tu: Tupolev Tu
built 675 days ago
The Tu-154 was developed to replace the turbojet powered Tupolev Tu-104, plus the An-10 and Il-18 turboprops. Design criteria in replacing these three relatively diverse aircraft included the ability to operate from gravel or packed earth airfields, to be able to fly at high altitudes above most Soviet Union air traffic, and good field performance. To meet these aims the initial Tu-154 design featured three Kuznetsov (now KKBM) NK-8 turbofans (which ... powered the larger, longer range Il-62) giving a relatively good thrust to weight ratio, triple bogie main undercarriage units which retract into wing pods and a rear engine T-tail configuration.

The Tupolev Tu-95 has been built in many Tu-95 and Tu-142 variants but was originally built as a strategic, intercontinental heavy-payload bomber aircraft. The aircraft is currently in service in both the Russian Air Force Naval Aviation and Russian Air Force Air Army units, and with the Indian Air Force. The Tu-95s were designed and built at the Tupolev Joint Stock Company Aviation Plant in Moscow. First flight of the Tu-95 was in 1954 and it entered service in 1956.
Developed from the medium-range Tupolev Tu-104, the Tu-124 was meant to meet Aeroflot's requirement for a regional airliner to supersede the Ilyushin Il-14. It was very similar to the Tu-104 (merely a scaled-down version). The two were hard to tell apart when seen at a distance. It was not a complete copy of the Tu-104.... The Tu-124 included a number of refinements, including double-slotted flaps, a large centre-section airbrake, automatic spoilers, and the extension of the wings' trailing edge roots. It also included a parachute to be used in the event of an emergency landing and low pressure tires in the event of a rough landing surface.
