Trucks contribute to air, noise, and water pollution in a similar fashion to automobiles. In fact, in the case of air pollution emissions, trucks may actually emit lower emissions than autos on a per pound of vehicle mass basis, although the absolute level on a vehicle mile traveled basis is higher and diesel soot is especially problematic for health.[1] With respect to noise pollution trucks emit considerably higher sound levels at all speeds compared to typical automobiles; this contrast is particularly strong in the case of heavy duty trucks.[2]

The purpose of the NVMSRP is to prevent mercury pollution by removing mercury switches from automobiles and trucks before the vehicles are shredded and recycled into new steel. U. S. Steel supports the program and is participating fully in it as a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Other parties to the agreement include the AISI, the Steel Manufacturers Association, auto manufacturers, vehicle dismantlers and shredders, environmental organizations and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Detroit, April 25/PRNewswire/ - Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F), in close cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Transport Canada, has conducted an extensive investigation of ignition switches in Ford and Lincoln-Mercury cars and trucks. As a result of this investigation, Ford will notify approximately 8.7 million customers in the US and Canada of a safety recall involving certain 1988 - 1993 model year cars and trucks. In a very small number of vehicles, the ignition switch could experience an internal short circuit, creating the potential for overheating, smoke, and possibly fire in the steering column area of the vehicle.
