At the beginning of the Roman period Troyes ('Augustobona) was the principal settlement of the Tricassi, from whose name its own is derived. It owed its conversion to Christianity to Saints Savinian and Potentian, and in the first half of the 4th century its bishopric was created as a suffragan of Sens. St Loup, the most illustrious bishop of Troyes, occupied the episcopal seat from 426 to 479. He is said to have persuaded Attila, chief of the Huns, to leave the town unpillaged, and is known to have exercised great influence in the Church of Gaul. The importance of the monastery of St Loup, which he founded, was overshadowed by that of the abbey of nuns known as Notre-Dame-aux-Nonnains, which possessed large schools and .enjoyed great privileges in the town, in some points exercising authority even over the bishops themselves. In 892 and 898 Troyes suffered from the depredations of the Normans, who on the second occasion reduced the town to ruins.
Troyes is a city with an industrial past, rich in medieval architecture, and with a growing university population. For the Médiathèque, the municipality wanted a welcoming environment that would attract a diverse group of users. To do this, it applied new technologies to old sources, such as scanning 12th-century manuscripts to make them available as digital files. It ... instituted an open-shelf policy for contemporary books and allowed people to take some titles out of the building (which is not the norm at French libraries).
Troyes ... has some museums that have surprisingly fine, rich collections. The musée d'Art Moderne (museum of Modern Art), which is regally set in the superbly-restored former bishop's palace, is attired with a plethora of great masters. Modigliani, Braque, Picasso, Derain, Vlaminck, Delaunay, the glassmaker Marinot and many other talented artists are comfortably installed here.
Present day Troyes has a vibrant cultural and artistic life, a thriving economy and many sporting activities. Varied events take place throughout the year, such as the “Nuits de Champagne” (musical entertainment evenings) “les Bâtisseurs de Cathédrales” (an open-air show telling the story of how the cathedrals were built), “les 48 heures d’Automobiles Anciennes” (Vintage Car Rally) or the many Trade Fairs, to name but a few.
Troyes Tickets The Troyes football club first managed to climb into the top ranks of French football club activity in the year 1954-1955. The second time Troyes football club played in Ligue One occurred in 1999-2000. At the same time, Troyes went through several name changes before finally settling upon the current name. The refounded Troyes team was established in 2000. The Troyes football tickets purchasers saw a football game win in the Intertoto Cup in the year 2001. The French Cup in 1956 saw the team finish in second place and Troyes won the Coupe Gambardella in 1956 only to come back as runner up in 1957.
The Jewish revenues from the bailiwick of Troyes indicate that at this time the Jews were very numerous throughout the country; for in 1301 their total income amounted to 1,000 livres. Prosperity reigned among them; and the seigniors of the country and the ecclesiastical dignitaries when financially embarrassed applied to them for assistance. The Jews were expelled from Troyes in 1306, but returned in great numbers in 1315. The "Document sur les Juifs du Barrois" contains the names of some who settled at Troyes during the years 1321 to 1323: Maistre Deuaye, Bonjuyf son of Bonjuyf, Bonne Vie and Domim his son, Terine, and Haquinet. In 1379 the family of Isaac Lyon of Troyes obtained as a special favor permission to reside in Burgundy. Toward the close of the fourteenth century Abraham of Treves, son of Mattithiah, and Johanan of Treves lived at Troyes.
