One of Troyes ' two tourist offices is at 16 bd Carnot (03 25 82 62 70) and they will be able to tell you which buses go to the shopping outlets. The gare SNCF and gare routière are just off bd Carnot to the west of town. The town centre tourist office is on rue Mignard (03 25 73 36 88). As for accommodation, there is little difference in price between the hotels near the station and those in the central old town, so take your pick. The chic Champs des Oiseaux near the cathedral at 20 rue Linard Gonthier (03 25 80 58 50) is made up of three Renaissance houses and decorated in a very contemporary style, with rooms from €85-100. During the day, the patio and sitting room are ideal spots to sample the delicious cakes at afternoon tea.

Troyes is a great place for a ramble. Why not get some fresh air with a walk around the Lac d'Orient or the Lac du Der - the largest artificial lake in Europe? Alternatively, you could take a stroll through the town to see the Gothic cathedral, half-timbered medieval houses and great museums. If you like shopping, don’t miss the discount designer outlet stores.

Troyes is less well-known than nearby Reims but in many ways is the more attractive of the two towns with cobbled streets, medieval buildings and Gothic churches. Visit the bustling market, the fascinating museums or stroll through the narrow cobbled streets soaking up the traditional French atmosphere. Just outside Troyes is an array of factory and discount outlets with designer clothes and shoes.

[Marcus Introduction] RABBI SOLOMON BAR ISAAC (RaSHI) of Troyes (1040-11O5) is probably the best known medieval Jewish scholar. He attained this popularity, which he still retains in Jewry, through his Biblical and Talmudic commentaries which are noted for their terseness, clarity, and erudition. Most of his life was spent in his native town of Troyes, where he encouraged the Biblical and Talmudic studies which his descendants carried on and which made of northern France one of the great centers of rabbinic scholarship in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
