Tropico: Paradise Island is the official expansion pack for Tropico, the hit "Fun in the Sun" Caribbean Simulation from Pop Top Software. As the all-powerful dictator El Presidente, face new challenges as you build your thriving island paradise. not to mention a bountiful Swiss bank account. Tropico: Paradise Island provides more tourist attractions such as beach villas, tennis courts, and nature preserves to help lure those Yanqui tourists. And for you "evil" tyrants out there, new dictator attributes allow for the success of even the most unjust regime! It may be time to enforce Martial Law, because it looks like there's trouble in paradise.

Tropico was one of the best strategy games last year. It took the familiar city-management-simulation genre and infused it with a great premise and an interesting political element. You not only had to preside over a Caribbean island, but you ... had to deal with vastly opposing factions within your populace. Tropico had personality, charm, and a robust system of simulated individuals that could be coddled, terrorized, and manipulated in a variety of ways. And it was the first management game in which a certain subset of your population would never fully support you simply because you could choose to play as a fascist pop singer with a predilection for drink.

Tropico has Gold, Iron and Bauxite for natural minerals. These can be used to ship out of country for cash in native state. Gold can ... be brought to a jewelry factory for refinement into a more valuable commodity (jewelry). You can also chop trees for export or refinement. Some crops can also be processed into more valuable goods (rum and cigars, for example). You can even utilize the natural beauty of your island for tourism.

Tropico ... has a broad range of appeal, thanks in part to its various difficulty levels, which range from a sandbox mode to sadistic realism. You can select different victory conditions for different styles of games. Tropico can also be played at any number of speeds, and you can interact completely with the game while it's paused. Casual players can crank down the political and economic factors and just doodle around with impunity, dropping buildings and watching the island grow, as in games like SimCity.

In Tropico, players take on the role of a newly instated leader of a remote Caribbean island and are challenged to build a path of progress for a nation mired in poverty, civil unrest and infighting. Based on their economic vision, gamers build hotels, mines, factories, and over 100 other structures. Diplomacy and politics will factor heavily in Tropico, as players must pacify various internal factions and external threats. If the island's growth is well planned, the player will have plenty of money to buy the peoples' favor and ensure prosperity. If growth is poorly planned and the economy falters, the population may revolt, forcing the player to institute martial law.

Tropico: Paradise Island adds a number of welcome new features to the original. The majority of the expansion's additions involve tourism: There are more types of hotels and attractions and even more types of tourists. But Paradise Island ... fills in some gaps from the original game by introducing new edicts, buildings, music (another hour of excellent songs from Daniel Indart and Latin Music Specialists), and Presidente backgrounds and traits. Moreover, it fixes some minor problems and includes a slew of new and improved scenarios to challenge your ability to keep your people in line and your Swiss bank account brimming.
