A Tropical Cyclone is the most fierce storm in the world. It has many names including: hurricane (North America), Cyclone (Around India) and Typhoon (Southeast of Asia). This fearsome storm is born when convection organizes around a low-level closed surface circulation. As the convection wraps around the center more and becomes more deeper, the cyclone intensifies.

Tropical Cyclones (known as hurricanes and tropical storms in the Atlantic Ocean, typhoons in the Pacific Ocean and cyclones in the Indian Ocean) can be a very powerful and destructive type of storm. This type of storm develops over oceans 8° to 15° North and South of the equator.

Tropical Cyclone Gonu, the first recorded Cat 5 storm over the Arabian Sea, is continuing its path toward the Strait of Hormuz. What is unclear is whether the storm will fall heavily on Oman or make a turn northward towards Iran. In the midst of such uncertainty, the Agence-France Presse is reporting that the Omani government has evacuated 7,000 people from zones likely to be affected. The cyclone is currently producing 40 foot waves and 140 kt winds.

Over the past two centuries, tropical cyclones have been responsible for the deaths of about 1.9 million persons worldwide. Large areas of standing water caused by flooding lead to infection, as well as contributing to mosquito-borne illnesses. Crowded evacuees in shelters increase the risk of disease propagation.[76] Tropical cyclones significantly interrupt infrastructure, leading to power outages, bridge destruction, and hamper reconstruction efforts.[76][77]
