Trojan Horse: Programs
built 206 days ago
The majority of Trojan horse infections occur because the user was tricked into running an infected program. This is why it is advised not to open unexpected attachments on emails -- the program is often a cute animation or an image, but behind the scenes it infects the computer with a Trojan or worm. The infected program doesn't have to arrive via email; it can be sent in an Instant Message, downloaded from a Web site or by FTP, or even delivered on a CD or floppy disk. (Physical delivery is uncommon, but if one were the specific target of an attack, it would be a fairly reliable way to infect a computer.) Furthermore, an infected program could come from someone who sits down at a computer and loads it manually. However, receiving a Trojan in this manner is very rare. It is usually received through a download.
A new Trojan horse program that attacks and removes troublesome advertising software, known as "adware," is circulating on the Internet, according to antivirus company Symantec Corp. The program, called Downloader. Lunii, was discovered. Classically, a Trojan horse, by definition, smuggles in something dangerous in the guise of something desirable. Some spyware programs get spread in just this manner. The distributor of spyware presents the program as a useful utility — for instance as a "Web accelerator" or as a helpful software agent. Users download and install the software, only to find out later that it can cause harm. For example, Bonzi Buddy, a spyware program targeted at children, claims that:
[One] common remote control Trojan horse is named the Subseven Trojan. This Trojan is ... sent as an e-mail attachment and after it is executed can display a customized message that often misleads the victim. Actually, the customized message is intended to mislead the victim. This particular program will allow someone to have nearly full control of the victim’s computer with the ability to delete folders and/or files. It also uses a function that displays something like a continuous screen cam, which allows the hacker to see screen shots of the victim’s computer.
In the context of computer software, a Trojan horse is a program that unlike a virus contains or installs a malicious program (sometimes called the payload or 'trojan'). The term is derived from the classical myth of the Trojan Horse. Trojan horses may appear to be useful or interesting programs (or at the very least harmless) to an unsuspecting user, but are actually harmful when executed.
A Trojan horse is a program that infects your computer and allows a hacker to run hidden tasks behind your back. A Trojan infection can allow total remote access to your computer by a third party.
