Trivium: Bands
built 131 days ago
Trivium Trivium is a very determined band. Not Even hurricane Charlie could keep them from performing in their hometown Orlando. Trivium was founded in 2000. Trivium is Latin for the intersection between the three schools of learning: grammar, rhetoric and logic. With this name they point out the diversity of their music, which varies from late 80’s and 90’s trash to death metal and prog-rock.

Hailing from Orlando, Florida, Trivium is a thrash metal/metalcore band, pounding out distorted power chords with enough aggression to power a small country. In some ways their back-to-basics, riff-based sound is not unlike post-thrash acts like Lamb Of God, but with two differences: Lead singer Matt Heafy doesn't stick to a growl, often singing melodically on a song's chorus. And guitarists Corey Beaulieu and Heafy make room for plenty of solos displaying fearsome technique (the band recently contributed a flawless recreation of Metallica's "Master Of Puppets" to a tribute album). They're so ambitious and such good songwriters that they're bound to have a big crossover hit one of these days, but don't wait: whether you're a metal fan or not, Trivium (especially their 2006 The Crusade) are worth hearing.

Trivium formed in 2000 and soon built a buzz around the Orlando, FL, metal community with their blend of metalcore, thrash, and progressive metal flourish. They secured a deal with the German imprint Lifeforce, and in October 2003 issued the full-length debut Ember to Inferno with a lineup that included vocalist/guitarist Matt Heafy, drummer Travis Smith, and bassist Brent Young. The album was well received, and Trivium signed with Roadrunner for their next effort. Ascendancy appeared in March 2005, at which point band personnel had shifted to include Heafy, Smith, bassist Paolo Gregoletto, and guitarist Corey Beaulieu. The album was reissued in May of the following year with four additional tracks and a bonus DVD in tow. Trivium headed over to the U.K. in June for the 2006 Download Festival and multiple other European headlining gigs before they were back in the States in time for the summer's traveling metal/hardcore fest Sounds of the Underground.

Trivium brought the heavy music scene to its knees with the brilliance of 2005's ASCENDENCY. Aggressive touring helped them to build a rabid following and honed the band's already fierce chops. The progression of CRUSADE showcases a young group poised to inherit the coveted metal music crown from the very artists that inspired them to play. With the collaboration of co-producer and engineer Jason Suecof, the band pushes their thrashy verse/hooky chorus stylings to even greater melodic heights. Strong vocals, syncopated rhythms, and shredding solos capture lightning in a bottle in the ambitious spirit of a modern-day amalgam of early Metallica and Testament.
On the strength of their second album, 2005’s Ascendancy, Trivium has traveled the world, building their fanbase with each tour. They were the breakout band of Ozzfest 2005’s second stage and will return to the U.S. festival scene this summer on the second run of the Sounds of the Underground tour. Showers of critical acclaim ... have met their polished blend of classic metal stylings and modern sensibilities. The members of Trivium will fulfill two dreams this year by playing on the same bill as Metallica at the U.K.’s Download Festival and, later, opening for Iron Maiden on a European tour.
