Triple H and Stephanie enter their dressing room to discover a pile of beer cans. Austin walks out of the restroom, acts like Hunter's best friend, and says he stopped in to use the facilities. Triple H is mad. Edge and Christian make their way to the ring expecting to face Kaientai, but the Acolytes enter in their place. During the match, Funaki saves Faarooq from a double chair shot. Faarooq takes the win.

Triple H returned to RAW as a face on January 7, 2002 at Madison Square Garden. He soon won that year's Royal Rumble,[29] and ... received a WWF Undisputed Championship match in the main event at WrestleMania X8. At WrestleMania X8, Triple H beat Chris Jericho for the WWF Undisputed Championship.[29] After holding the title for a month, Helmsley lost it to Hulk Hogan at Backlash 2002.[29] Triple H then became exclusive to the SmackDown! roster due to the WWF Draft Lottery and continued to feud with Chris Jericho, culminating in a Hell in a Cell match at Judgment Day.

After Triple H's heel turn in early 1999, he moved away from his "DX" look, taping his fists for matches, sporting new and shorter wrestling trunks, and a shorter hairstyle. His image and his personality changed as he fought to earn a WWF title shot. After numerous failed attempts at winning the championship, Triple H and Mankind challenged WWF Champion "Stone Cold" Steve Austin at SummerSlam 1999 in a triple threat match. In a contest which featured Jesse "The Body" Ventura as the special guest referee, Mankind won the match by pinning Austin, becoming a three-time WWF champion. The following night on RAW, Triple H defeated Mankind to win his first WWF Championship.

At Smackdown, November 18, Triple H got what he wanted from Vince McMahon, as the leader of Degeneration X proposed a match between the two. Vince never got to answer as Test, Stephanie and Shane fell down from the stairs. However before Triple H proposed the match, he and the rest of Degeneration X did anything in their power to get inside Vince's head by attacking the Stooges and Test, DX ... did several pranks to the rest of the McMahon family.

Zu Weihnachten kam es dann dank Commissioner Sgt. Slaughter zu einem Match zwischen Shawn Michaels und Triple H um den European Titel. Beide Freunde lösten das Problem indem sich Shawn hinlegte und Hunter ihn pinnen konnte und somit neuer European Champion wurde. Es kam zu einer Fehde mit Owen Hart gegen den Hunter den Titel verlor, aber wieder im März 98 zurück gewinnen konnte.
