The currency on Trinidad and Tobago is the Trinidad and Tobago dollar... known as the TT (pronounced teetee). US dollars are also widely accepted. Visa and Mastercard credit cards are accepted at many stores. American Express, Diners' Club, Discover, JCB and others are only accepted in a few places. ATM (ABM) cards using Cirrus and Plus networks will work in local ATMs and will allow you to make withdrawals in TT dollars converted to your home currency. The exchange rate when withdrawing from the ATM is slightly better than when exchanging cash.

As the majority of the population live in Trinidad, this is the location of most major towns and cities. There are three major municipalities in Trinidad: Port of Spain, the capital, San Fernando, and Chaguanas. Of these, Chaguanas is the fastest growing. The main town in Tobago is Scarborough.

Recently, Trinidad has secured distribution rights for several other Cuban products into its portfolio. These include San Cristobal wines, Coppelia ice cream, Varadero rum and Cubita coffee. The appointment of Trinidad as the official distributor in Malaysia is sound testimony to Trinidad's reputation in Cuba. For some of these products, Malaysia will be the first country in Asia that the manufacturers are exporting to.

Trinidad has several good four-lane highways and one controlled-access highway. However, road quality decreases quickly on secondary roads. Rural roads are narrow and often have deep drainage ditches on either side. Some are in poor repair, and are frequently congested. Night travel should be avoided other than on major highways. Roadside assistance exists, but is extremely limited and subject to lengthy delays.

Questions of whether Trinidad could take a punch appeared when he went up against world championship caliber opponents like Alberto Cortes of Argentina. On October 3, 1992, in Paris, the veteran Cortes entered the bout with a record of 51-3. One of Cortes' losses came at the hands of the great Julio Cesar Chavez. Trinidad got sloppy in the second round and Cortes made him pay by knocking him down twice. It was the first time Trinidad had been knocked down in a fight. When Cortes came out to finish him off in the third round, Trinidad caught fire and returned the favor by tattooing Cortes with a barrage of punches. Cortes was helpless and unable to defend himself, prompting the referee to stop the fight.

Trinidad and Tobago has made a transition from an oil-based economy to one based on natural gas. In 2006, natural gas production averaged 4000 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d), compared with 3200 mmscf/d in 2005. The petrochemical sector, including plants producing methanol, ammonia, urea, and natural gas liquids, has continued to grow in line with natural gas production, which continues to expand and should meet the needs of new industrial plants coming on stream over the next few years, including iron, aluminum, ethylene and propylene. In December 2005, the Atlantic LNG fourth production module or "train" for liquefied natural gas (LNG) began production. Train 4 has increased Atlantic LNG's overall output capacity by almost 50% and is among the largest LNG trains in the world at 5.2 million tons/year of LNG. Trinidad and Tobago is the fifth-largest exporter of LNG in the world and the single largest supplier of LNG to the U.S., supplying two-thirds of all LNG imported into the U.S. As a result of Atlantic LNG Train 4, the energy sector experienced 21.4% growth in 2006 and accounted for nearly 47% of GDP at that year's end.
