The first European to reach Trinidad and Tobago was Christopher Columbus. He named Trinidad (meaning “Trinity” in Spanish) after three peaks he saw from his ship. The name he gave Tobago, Bella Forma (“Beautiful Shape”), did not stick. The island’s present name comes from the word tobacco, which Carib Indians grew on Tobago. Columbus claimed Trinidad for Spain, and it remained a Spanish colony until 1802, when Britain took it. Tobago’s history remained separate until Britain joined it with Trinidad in 1889. Before then, Tobago changed hands many times.

The Trinidad and Tobago constitution guarantees freedom of expression and freedom of the press. However, after the 1995 election of the current administration, the freedom of Trinidad and Tobago's press came under peril. In April 1996, Guardian journalists enlisted the help of UNESCO to organize a public forum on the role of the media in a democratic society. Journalists stressed the need to safeguard editorial independence, and demanded that the outdated libel laws be repealed. They claimed these laws are used as a backhand method of gagging the media. Being a former sugar cane colony, Trinidad and Tobago is famous for its Rum. Popular brands of Rum are Black Label and Vat 19 by Fernandes and White Oak, Old Oak by Angostura. Some Bars will allow you to buy individual rum drinks either straight with or without a chaser, or mixed. Some bars will allow you to purchase a whole bottle of Rum, or a "half" which is equivalent to half a bottle. Some bars will sell a "nip" which is less than half. One can ... purchase bottles of Rum in stores and at duty free stores at the airport to carry home.

With respect to domestic sources of pollution, malfunctioning sewage treatment plants installed to service residential developments in Trinidad and Tobago have discharged inadequately treated sewage into drainage channels which flow into wetlands at Caroni and Bon Accord. Household solid waste disposed into watercourses is ... transported into wetlands to the detriment of their ecoysytem.

The Hindu festival of lights, Divali, is celebrated in most areas in Trinidad and a few areas in Tobago. Every year during one night in October-November small oil lamps called deyas are lit on the inside and outside of homes and in public places. Additionally, there is a celebration and festival called the Divali Nagar, where Indian song, dance, plays and other cultural items are on display. The Divali Nagar takes place at the Divali Nagar Site in Chaguanas, Trinidad. Many corporate sponsors set up booths and there is even an open air indian restaurant where one can purchase Indian food including roti. Divali is a public holiday in Trinidad and Tobago.

In 2005, the FAO, working through MALMR’s personnel initiated a project that installs drip irrigation on farms with vegetable or vine-growing crops in Trinidad and Tobago. This programme extends to 2007. These installations being used as demonstration farms leading to the adoption of the technology by an increasing number of farmers.
