Trinidad: African Slaves
built 281 days ago
East of Trinidad are the ruins of some 70 centuries-old sugar mills. The stunning, 146-foot-high Iznaga Tower, built around 1840, looms over the valley as a reminder of days when slaves worked the cane fields and the mills.

Many different religions are present in Trinidad and Tobago. The largest two are the Roman Catholics (26%) and Hindus (22%); the Anglicans (8%), Muslims (6%), Seventh-day Adventists (4%), Presbyterians, Jehovah's Witnesses and Methodists are among the smaller faiths. Two African syncretic faiths, the Shouter or Spiritual Baptists and the Orisha faith (formerly called Shangos, a less than complimentary term) are among the fastest growing religious groups, as are a host of evangelical and fundamentalist churches usually lumped as "Pentecostal" by most Trinidadians (although this designation is often inaccurate).
Valle de los Ingenios In the early 19th century slaves revolt in Haiti caused French planters to flee to Trinidad. Slaves contributed to the formation of Cuban nationality, as they brought along their African customs, traditions, songs and dances, as well as their African religions. In addition to its cultural wealth and exuberant nature, Trinidad ... brags spectacular Valle de los Ingenios, a unique Sugar Mill Valley.
