Trigun manga, volume 1 (English version) Known for its Space Western theme, Trigun is about a man named "Vash the Stampede" and the two Bernardelli Insurance Company employees who follow him to minimize the damage caused by his appearance. Most of the damage attributed to Vash is caused by bounty hunters after the "60,000,000,000$$" (sixty billion "double dollars") bounty on Vash's head for the destruction of the city of July. However, he cannot remember the incident clearly due to amnesia. Throughout his travels, Vash tries to save lives using non-lethal force. He is occasionally joined by a priest, Nicholas D. Wolfwood, who is an excellent gunfighter like Vash, and is later targeted by a band of assassins, the Gung-Ho Guns, for unknown reasons.
Trigun is an excellent comedy series!! The hero, Vash the Stampede, is an outlaw with a bounty of $$60 Billion on his head. However, he has a strong principle of NOT taking a human life, so all of the damage and casualties that follow in his wake are caused by the people after the reward. Vash is being followed by two insurance agents, Meryl Stripe and Millie Thompson, who are there to try and stop all the damage that is driving up insurance rates. Basically, Vash is a sharp-shooting, bullet dodging......buffoon. :O) Most of the comic relief comes from him.

"Trigun" Trigun offers a new twist on the American western, without doing something as drastic as set the whole series in space, as anime often does. Another twist is the characterization of its hero as not always perfect. Like Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon, Vash the Stampede is a bit of a klutz, and, as mentioned before, quite the dork. When he has to, though, like Sailor Moon, he gets the job done effectively. He ... has his "bishonen" moments that help to bring in the female viewers. Another departure from the usual is that the female characters are less fragile flowers than steel magnolias.

Trigun doesn't initially offer any introduction to its low-tech, future-Western world. Vash's parched planet has two suns and the natives ride tapir-snouted, hulking birdlike creatures instead of horses, but otherwise the series uses all the familiar motifs of the traditional Western, right down to the lone vulture waiting patiently as two gunmen stare each other down in the center of a deserted street. The story themes are as archetypal as the scenery--the lone hero facing off against the corrupt sheriff on behalf of the helpless saloon girl, the desperado demanding a public showdown to avenge his murdered family. Even the music seems like it was yanked from the same Sergio Leone flick as the crumbling ghost towns and the raw, dry deserts around them. Only the giant bug-eyed mutant mercenaries really seem out of place.

Though now a little dated, the quality of Trigun is still pretty good. The animation is a little washed, but the action is fluid and the settings are detailed. The character designs are interesting and somewhat unique as well. Putting a huge red trench coat on Vash makes little sense considering that he lives on a desert planet, but it makes his image and appeal look that much more better. Other features include great-voice acting, a decent blues/rock soundtrack, and a lot of humorous moments. The DVD itself contains the common special features found in most anime, ones that are already running through your head so I’ve no need to mention them here.

On balance Trigun is first and foremost a comedy--and a funny one at that--with real substance later in the series. There's enough semi-goofy gunfighting to keep anybody happy, an ongoing story that is anything but funny, and a gripping conclusion laden with serious, powerful, and thought-provoking subject matter. Best of all, the themes are comfortably compartmentalized, so it all fits together into a thoroughly enjoyable series with a message that sticks with you after it's over.
