It is ... obvious that the trickster is a most enigmatic character. So many questions confront the listener of these tales. Why is he referred to mythology — outside of America myths in general are dignified and have a serious intent. Is he some kind of semi-divinity? What is his true function in ethnic folklore? Is he an object of entertainment, or a bewildered spirit?

These stories feature Iktomi (which means spider) a trickster character from the Plains Indians. He uses his own magical powers and cunning to outsmart others, but often falls victim to his own pranks.

One common theme in trickster tales is the smaller or weaker creature overcoming and getting the best of the stronger one by using his or her wits. Can you think of any modern cartoon characters that continue this tradition?
An historical example of the trickster is the tradition of court jesters. Jesters are often portrayed as trivial characters, comedians who provided light entertainment for the wealthy and powerful. But court jesters were actually members of the royal staff, with the rank and privilege that went along with being close confidants of kings and queens.

The most familiar type of African folktale is the animal-trickster story. The dominant characteristic of the trickster is his cleverness, which he uses to satisfy his greed or to outwit others. In spite of his roguish mischievousness, he enjoys the sympathy of the audience, because he is usually getting the better of larger animals or people.
