Trickster tales are usually about animals who trick other animals. The trickster usually wins due to his cleverness and some kind of character flaw of his victim. (Example: "Bre'r Rabbit, Bre'r Fox, and the Briar Bush).

The animal trickster tales involve small sly animals such as Brer Rabbit, with the ability to outwit stronger foes such as Brer Fox or Brer Bear. (Brer is an abbreviation for brother... spelled, Buh and Ber.) One tale of Ber Rabbit and Ber Fox, the animals start calling each other brother at first, but next moment, threaten each other. This story helps to illustrate the hypocrisy and cruelty of the slave world. In "Tar Baby," both the rabbit and the wolf are tricked, but the weaker, more intelligent animal triumphs in the end.
