Trees: Species
built 233 days ago
The earliest trees were tree ferns and horsetails, which grew in vast forests in the Carboniferous Period; tree ferns still survive, but the only surviving horsetails are not of tree form. Later, in the Triassic Period, conifers, ginkgos, cycads and other gymnosperms appeared, and subsequently flowering plants in the Cretaceous Period. Most species of trees today are flowering plants (Angiosperms) and conifers. The listing below gives examples of many well-known trees and how they are typically classified.

Individual trees and shrubs have value, but the variability of species, size, condition, and function makes determining their economic value difficult. The economic benefits of trees can be both direct and indirect. Direct economic benefits are usually associated with energy costs. Air-conditioning costs are lower in a tree-shaded home. Heating costs are reduced when a home has a windbreak. Trees increase in value from the time they are planted until they mature.
Appearance: Several species of trees were considered sacred in Egyptian mythology. The names of all of them were written with the same hieroglyphic determinative. In Egyptian art, trees were usually depicted by this sign by simply being placed into the larger representational context. It was been suggested that the tree shown in the glyph is the Maerua crasifolia which is found in throughout Africa, tropical Arabia, and Palestine, but is disappearing from Egypt.
There are two general types of trees, angiosperms and gymnosperms. Angiosperms are flowering plants in which the ovule, or seed, is encased in a protective ovary. With about 235,000 species, the angiosperm division is the largest and most diverse plant group. It is divided into dicots, plants with two cotyledons (seed leaf structures), that include the familiar broadleaf trees such as maple and oak; and the monocots, plants with one cotyledon that include the palms and lily trees.

Other various species of trees were believed to be sacred to individual deities. For example, the tamarisk tree was sacred to Wepwawet, the acacia was sacred to Horus, and as mentioned earlier the sycamore was sacred to Re and the willow was sacred to Osiris.
Alpha Natural Resources Black Bear #4 was reclaimed with the planting of more than 147,000 trees, including a dozen different species, which helps to offset greenhouse gasses. Supplemented with native and non-competitive ground cover, the reclamation plan provides a diversity of habitat for wildlife and creates a high quality commercial resource of hardwood trees.
