Since 1989, Friends of Trees has planted more than 340,000 trees and shrubs in the Portland-Vancouver area. With the help of thousands of volunteers, Friends of Trees has shown national leadership by increasing Portland's tree canopy during the past three decades during a time when a dozen other major U.S. cities lost significant tree cover. Because of its accomplishments, the nonprofit has received several local and national awards during the past two years. The DeWitt Stern Group is planting trees in inner city areas in both New York and Los Angeles as part of its DSGreenspace initiative. The DSGreenspace initiative is a response to the private insurance brokerage firm's recognition of the importance of a more sustainable way of doing business, for not only the social and environmental impacts, but ... the economic benefits of saving on paper costs. DSG is both trying to reduce its carbon footprint by reducing paper use company-wide, by encouraging electronic communication, but also by encouraging other firms to do the same. The DeWitt Stern Group website has a tree counter in which DSG shows how many trees have been planted thus far (110).

The Tree Set Visualization program is capable of summarizing large sets of phylogenetic trees. This program depicts a "tree space" using multi-dimensional scaling based on tree-to-tree distance metrics. Visualizing sets of trees in such a way can yield more information about the trees that may otherwise be lost using more conventional methods for condensing large sets of trees.
