Trees: Christmas Trees
built 155 days ago
ATLANTA, Nov. 15, 2004 (PRNewswire) -- A ship loaded down with freshly cut spruce trees, its deck covered with festive holiday decorations. The captain jovially welcomes children and their families aboard to select that perfect tree that will greet them Christmas morning. For more than a century, this scene has played out along the Chicago waterfront, first aboard 19th century schooners, now aboard modern-day Coast Guard vessels. It's all part of the legend of the Christmas tree ship, guided by a man who died at its helm, carried on by the wife and daughters determined to honor his legacy, and embraced by a city that refuses to let the tradition die. On Sunday, November 28, The Weather Channel shares this wonderful story as it premieres "The Christmas Tree Ship: A Holiday Storm Story" at 9:00 PM (ET/PT).
More than 2,000 trees are usually planted per acre. On an average 1,000-1,500 of these trees will survive. In the North, maybe, 750 trees will remain. Almost all trees require shearing to attain the Christmas tree shape. At six to seven feet, trees are ready for harvest. It takes six to ten years of fighting heavy rain, wind, hail and drought to get a mature tree.
Over 375,000 trees were recycled last year as part of the program. "This program gets more successful every year," said Robert C. Barker, Senior Civil Engineer at the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works. "People really seem to appreciate the convenience of the program and knowing that their Christmas trees will contribute good things to the environment."

The poll, conducted for the National Christmas Tree Association, projects that 24% of U.S. households will purchase a Real Christmas Tree in 2005 which would be about 27 million trees. Last year, 27.1 million U.S. households purchased a farm-grown Christmas Tree. One-third as many households (8%) will purchase an artificial tree in 2005, according to the poll.
