Austria's capital, Vienna, is located in the northeast of the country at the foothills of the Alps, alongside the Danube River. This city boasts a rich musical tradition which is still evident today with world class museums, galleries and theatres. It is well worth taking time to visit the Schonbrunn Palace which was the residence of the famous Hapsburgs from the 18th century onwards. A tour of the palace gives visitors the chance to see a stunning assortment of Baroque and Rococo state rooms and to view the hall of mirrors where Mozart once played. The Palace is set in vast gardens which include a zoo and a maze. At approximately £8 per person this is definitely a visit not to be missed.
Austria has a strong labor movement. The Austrian Trade Union Federation (OGB) comprises constituent unions with a total membership of about 1.4 million--about 40% of the country's wage and salary earners. Since 1945, the OGB has pursued a moderate, consensus-oriented wage policy, cooperating with industry, agriculture, and the government on a broad range of social and economic issues in what is known as Austria's "social partnership." The OGB has announced opposition to the new government's program for budget consolidation, social reform, and fiscal measures that favor entrepreneurs.
The Austria Railpass allows between three and eight days of travel within a 15-day period. This pass is valid for either first or second-class travel and is good value if you want to explore the country in depth.

While Austria may be known for its great culture, there is ... much to explore in its natural environment. Vienna alone has almost 200 miles of well-kept paths that pass through many of Europe’s most stunning parks. You can take a day cruise along the Danube, the main river of Vienna. However, if you prefer a more peaceful, relaxed atmosphere, you can rent a canoe or kayak and make your way down the Alte Donau. This is a smaller stream that bisects residential neighborhoods to the north of the Danube River. Or, if you prefer air to water, you should visit Voralberg in westen Austria, where you can go hot air ballooning over the country’s great landscapes.

Austria traditionally has been active in "bridge-building to the east," increasing contacts at all levels with eastern Europe and the states of the former Soviet Union. Austrians maintain a constant exchange of business representatives, political leaders, students, cultural groups, and tourists with the countries of central and eastern Europe. Austrian companies are active in investing and trading with those countries as well. In addition, the Austrian Government and various Austrian organizations provide assistance and training to support the changes underway in the region.
In Austria Gemütlichkeit is a word used to convey genuine hospitality, old-world charm, cozy ambiance, and country simplicity. Awesome mountain scenery, adorable villages, charming cities, and a rich cultural heritage add to the joy of visiting. Austria ... offers an outstanding variety of places to stay: handsome castles tucked in the mountains, small hotels hugging the shores of serene lakes, cozy chalets in fields of wildflowers, petite inns within fairy-tale walled villages, and world-class hotels in Vienna and Salzburg. The blend of the Austrians' warmth of welcome and their love of preserving the best of their heritage produces a marvelous travel experience. Austria is a treasure just waiting to be discovered.
