Transubstantiation
built 221 days ago
The term Transubstantiation was coined by the theologians of the 12th Century. As used to define the Eucharist. "Trans" means "change", that is, change of substance. In philosophy substance is defined as that which makes a thing be what it is, and as such is invisible. When Jesus changed water into wine at Canna, this was a change of substance which ... changed its sensible aspects. Wine like water is a liquid but has a different color and taste than water.

Transubstantiation is completely unbiblical, being a doctrine that grew out of the Gnostic controversies of the mid second century and gradually developing to full flower in the 4th century. The Gnostics claimed that Jesus did not have literal flesh and blood, it only appeared that way. The early post-apostolic Christians countered that Jesus indeed had ordinary human flesh and blood and they began to emphasize this in the Lord's Supper.

Transubstantiation has become one of the more controversial issues faced by the modern Catholic Church. Some critics of the belief suggest that Catholic doctrines governing transubstantiation are not based on the scriptural teachings of Jesus Christ or the later epistles of St. Paul. The act of eating human flesh or drinking human blood would have been considered barbaric during the time of Christ, even as an act of remembrance. Although several passages in the New Testament suggest eating and drinking Christ's flesh and blood as a demonstration of faith, the act is usually viewed as symbolic.

The Catholic false doctrine of Transubstantiation violates the commands of divine Scripture found in Acts 15:6-30. The Gentile disciples were commanded to "abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication and from things strangled, and from blood." (Acts 15:20,29) So, according to this false doctrine, Jesus commanded what His inspired apostles forbade... pitting scripture against scripture.
Transubstantiation has historically resulted in accusations of cannibalism, beginning with the early church and more recently originating from radical sects. Ritual cannibalism has been reported to be used in some societies as a way to pay respect to, or gain physical or mental strength from the subject. However, such an origin in pagan religions is unlikely, given the early evidence of the doctrine in Christian history.

Transubstantiation is all but refuted in the RCC today. The Aristotelian metaphysics upon which the doctrine rests and without which the traditional expression of the doctrine is meaningless is no longer taught. The RCC retains the term but today means nothing different than what Anglicans mean by their term “Real Presence”.
