Being a Transsexual is not a choice it is thought to be inborn. The Hypothalmus in the brain which governs sexuality is female sized in the MTF and Male sized in the FTM. The phenomenon is Physical proof that a problem exists. Newer MRI machines can show the defect.

Transsexuality is a condition similar to trangenderism in which a transsexual person self-identifies as a member of the gender opposite to the one assigned to them at birth. Commonly, a transsexual believes that his or her body does not reflect his or her true 'inner' gender, and often pursue sex-change operations to have their physical body match their mental identification.

Transsexual inmates are sometimes denied hormone treatment because prison officials contend they are homosexual. Recently, a MTF transsexual with a significant amount of experience living as a woman was denied hormones for this reason. An AASECT-certified psychologist testified that earlier a medical doctor unfamiliar with Gender Identity Disorder had wrongly classified the transsexual individual as gay; ... the witness testified, the transsexual certainly must be so.

Transsexual inmate lawsuits are rare. Stevens is one of more than a dozen transsexual prisoners across the country who have sued over medical treatment in recent years. A federal judge last summer ordered Idaho prison officials to provide hormones to a transsexual inmate while a lawsuit was under way.

These standards are open to the criticism of being ineffective, or being too strict, discouraging genuinely transsexual people from seeking treatment. It is claimed that Meta-reviews of post-operative transsexuals prior to 1991 reveal a rate of serious regrets of less than 1% for transsexual men and less than 2% for transsexual women, while studies published after 1991 have reported a decrease in the rates for both, likely due to improved psychological and surgical treatments and increasing acceptance from society.[2]While such studies lend support for existing protocols concerning care of transsexuals, post-operative follow-up research is considered to be lacking.
