Transgender woman Rita Hester was stabbed to death on Nov. 28, 1998. Her death was the catalyst to begin an annual tribute to the victims of anti-transgender hate crimes. The victims are memorialized annually on Nov. 20, the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Transgender is often used as a euphemistic synonym for transsexual people by some. One set of reasoning for this is that it removes the conceptual image "sex" in "transsexual" that implies transsexuality is sexually motivated, which it is not. This usage is problematic because it can cause transgender people who do not identify as transsexual to be confused with them. It ... seems to remove the issue of social presentation (gender, in its social sense) from the question, even though gender role and presentation is an important part of the equation.

Hormonal therapy is an essential part of a transgender person's healthcare. Unfortunately, many insurance companies don't pay for hormonal therapy. Many AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAP) refuse payment as well. Finding safe ways to get the hormones they need and the clean needles they need to inject the hormones is a daunting task that can lead to sex for money, sharing needles and substance use.
