Transgender: People
built 156 days ago
Transgender is an umbrella term used to describe people whose gender identity (sense of themselves as male or female) or gender expression differs from that usually associated with their birth sex. Many transgender people live part-time or full-time as members of the other gender. Broadly speaking, anyone whose identity, appearance, or behavior falls outside of conventional gender norms can be described as transgender. However, not everyone whose appearance or behavior is gender-atypical will identify as a transgender person.

Transgender is not a sexual orientation; transgender people may have any sexual orientation. It is important to acknowledge that while some people may fit under this definition of transgender, they may not identify as such.

Transgender people have problems with laws and regulations about sex. To be seen and treated as the sex they wish, transgender people usually have to change their first name. They ... may want to change their identity documents to say the correct sex. For example, a transgender woman may wish to change her birth certificate or driving license to say her new female name and to say that she is a female.

Transgender people face pervasive discrimination in every area of life. Transgender people are often rejected by families, harassed and kicked out of school, and discriminated against in daily life in supermarkets, malls, on public transportation, etc. Although all of these problems are terrible, the most acute need for transgender people is anti-discrimination protections in the workplace. When a transgender person loses a job and can’t find another one due to additional discrimination, they can become homeless, are unable to provide for their families, and can end up on state-sponsored welfare programs.

Transgender patients often lead difficult, frustrating, and problematic lives. They are frequently discriminated against in school, the work place, and socially. Prior to gender reassignment surgery, transgender patients have a high incidence of attempted suicide; this is dramatically reduced once transitioning surgery has been completed. Surgery has proven to be the only treatment offering long term emotional relief, happiness and success for these individuals. On the other hand, many trans people are perfectly happy without undergoing a GRS procedure.

Transgender people are not always accepted in every society. They can suffer discrimination, violence, and even murder. Transgender people have fought for and have gained many rights and protections in some societies. In many places the fight for transgender rights is associated with the fight for homosexual and bisexual rights. Together these groups are sometimes called by the acronym LGBT for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender.
