Many transgendered persons experience some form of victimization as a direct result of their transgender identity or presentation. This victimization ranges from subtle forms of harassment and discrimination to blatant verbal, physical, and sexual assault, including beatings, rape and even homicide. The majority of assaults against transgender persons are never reported the police. A link between these experiences and mental health disorders such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is widely suspected, but has not been adequately documented.

NEW YORK (Catholic League) - Seton Medical Center in Daly City, California has been sued by a person claiming discrimination for being denied breast enlargement surgery following a transgender operation. The hospital, run by the Daughters of Charity, says the requested surgery violates Catholic teaching.

There has been much talk of late about issues affecting the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. Events like Congress's signing of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act - which bans workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation - and the Transgender Day of Remembrance - which reflects on the lives lost in the transgender community - are making people aware of GLBT problems.
