Transformers are utilized to step electrical voltages up or down, to couple signal energy from one stage to another, and to match the impedances of interconnected electrical or electronic components. Transformers transfer electric energy from one circuit to another circuit through magnetic induction. A transformer ordinarily consists of wire windings around a ferromagnetic core. There are two types of transformers used to convey electricity from a transmission system to a distribution system. Power transformers provide rated voltage and current to electric and electronic devices while isolating those devices from the AC current mains. Distribution transformers are installed in the distribution network to lower the voltage to levels conveyed to commercial buildings, households, and other end users.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of organic compounds use in a variety of applications, including dielectric fluids for capacitors and transformers, heat transfer fluids and as additives in adhesives and plastics. PCBs have been shown to cause cancer in animals and to cause a number of serious non-cancer health effects in animals, including effects on the immune system, reproductive system, nervous system, endocrine system and other health effects. PCBs are persistent contaminants in the environment. Due to the high lipid solubility and slow metabolism rate of these chemicals, PCBs accumulate in the fat-rich tissues of almost all organisms (bioaccumulation). The use of PCBs is prohibited in OECD countries... due to its wide use in the past, it still can be found in e-waste and in some other wastes.

Larger transformers (100-2500W) are available at better hardware stores at reasonable prices, comparable with US prices. The better models, which are not that much more expensive, have grounding (3-prong plug), fuse protection, and a power switch. Avoid the ones that have a reversible cord. Larger wattage transformers are very large and heavy.
