Though gone are the days of trains that made frequent rest stops at Train Bell Resort, the popular tranquil railroad rest, it will still remind you a bit of the Shady Rest. Nestled amongst the pine trees on the shores of the beautiful North Long Lake, all that remains of this historical stop is the newly remodeled Grand Lodge and the train bell for which the resort was named.

When the project is completed in early 2010, containerized freight moving in double-stack trains will be able to shave off about 200 miles and up to a day's transit time between the East Coast and the Midwest. Currently, double- stack trains must take longer routes by way of Harrisburg, Pa., or Knoxville, Tenn. The Heartland Corridor goes across Virginia, through southern West Virginia and north through Columbus, Ohio.

The Albuquerque BioPark offers two train rides on narrow gauge, ¾ scale trains. The Thunderbird Express loops through the Zoo, and the Rio Line travels between the Zoo and Aquarium/Botanic Garden with a stop at Tingley Beach.

Construction is under way to allow electric trains to travel at 110 mph between the state capital and the urban corner of the state about 100 miles away. Express trains will make the trip in 90 minutes, counting intermediate stops.
