I’ve been meaning to post that a Trader Joes is about to open in West Hartford. The store is right next to Best Buy pretty much meaning that I’ll be happy to go do the grocery shopping… it’s Heidi’s fault if I keep coming home with a DVD or CD or something every time I get the groceries.

Trader Joe’s ‘fresh’ crab cakes go directly against all of the wonderfulness that characterizes TJ’s. Instead of flavorful, interesting food, purchasers of these crab cakes get two three-ounce patties of minced crab meat bound with enough mayo and pureed red bell pepper to confuse the palate. Is it crab, or is it a non-crab pseudo-fish substitute created by evil vegetarians?

Ask someone at Trader Joe’s were there food is produced. Most are made outside of the US. (notice on the packaging that it will not state the location, just that it was made for TJ’s). This is why they have had problems with recalls. (Google “Trader Joes recall”). Also, organic isn’t what you think.

Trader Joe’s Charles Shaw Blend Chardonnay (aka Two Buck Chuck) has a nice pear aroma, and flavor notes of pear and oak. It was medium bodied, and had good clarity. We’re not regular Chardonnay tasters, but this one was better than its $3 price tag would suggest.

Trader Joe’s was the first supermarket to realize you can brand every-damn-thing, even produce. Branding is such an effective mind-bender it can convince dimwitted environmentalists that packaged product A is better for the planet than than unpackaged product B. (The trick is, print a cutesy mother earth “goddess” on product A. She blesses the whole affair.)
