The Toys for Tots program began in 1947. At that time, Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. The success of this pilot project prompted the Marine Corps to adopt and expand the Toys for Tots program in 1948 and turn it into a nationwide campaign. Over the last 59 years, Marines have distributed more than 370 million toys to more than 173 million needy children. The mission of this program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December of each year, which are then distributed as holiday gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.
