In July 2004, Toyota announced that the MR2 (as well as the Celica) would be discontinued in the US at the end of the 2005 model year because of increasing competition and lack of sales. [5] The ZZW30 sold 7,233 units in its debut year, falling to just 121 for the 2005 model, for a total of 23,868 through its six years of production in the US. However, it is still sold in Mexico, Europe and Japan. The 2006 model year is the last for the MR2, with the United Kingdom getting 300 final models in a special numbered TF300 series. A special 182 bhp turbocharged variant called the TTE Turbo (TTE standing for Toyota Team Europe) is available as a dealer installed package. This package is ... available for fitting to older Mk. Toyota decided the reason its second-generation MR2 was less popular than the first was that it was more expensive and heavier as a result of using Celica components instead of Corolla components as a foundation. So the MR2 Spyder is based on prosaic Corolla, employing such pieces as MacPherson strut suspension front and rear. This is more than adequate for typical street driving, but hard driving over uneven surfaces tends to expose the limitations of struts. (Even the much more expensive Boxster, which ... uses struts, has problems under such conditions as well.)

The Toyota MR2 Spyder was introduced for 2000 in only one well-equipped trim level. Antilock brakes, 15-inch wheels, air-conditioning, a glass rear window, power windows and locks, and a CD stereo were standard equipment. The mid-mounted 1.8-liter inline-4 was rated at 138 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission available was a five-speed manual.

On a short test route through the super bumpy and potholed streets of downtown LA, the MR2 Spyder was able to handle abuse like that without much drama. The suspension soaked up the worst of these poorly maintained streets with a suspension setup that is neither too soft nor too hard. In fact, it felt like a little boat skipping and skimming over waves of bad pavement and all the while it never lost its composure. This only inspires more driver confidence. The rigid body structure flexes just a little in rhythm with these bad roads and with very little cowl shake unlike roadsters of generation’s past. Some drivers may feel intimidated to drive this “little boat” in a sea of land yachts and oil tanker sized SUVs.
