The 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser has comfortable seats for passengers seated in its first and second rows. The materials used in building its interiors are a little old but their fit and finish is excellent. The third row of seats is comfortable only for kids, but it can be split and stored in the back. The fifth and the latest generation of Toyota Land Cruiser debuted in 1998. It was larger, heavier and more powerful than the past Land Cruisers. It was the first Toyota branded vehicle to get a V8 4.7 L 230-horsepower 320-lb-ft torque engine). Among the added performance and comfort features to the new line of Land Cruisers were the independent rear automatic climate control system, active traction control, vehicle skid control, electronic brake force distribution, six-disc in-dash CD player, DVD navigation system, standard third row seats and other plush amenities. Those shopping for a used Toyota Land Cruiser of this generation should feel relatively free to look at all of its years, as Toyota hasn't made any major changes. Generally, the newer the Land Cruiser is, the more features it will have. Stability control came out in 2000, for instance, and a navigation system in 2001. One downside to models previous to 2006 is that their V8s produced 40 fewer horsepower.

The Toyota Land Cruiser was started as a copy of the go-everywhere Willys Jeep. Originally named the Model BJ, it was the first vehicle to reach the sixth station of Mount Fuji in 1951. It was renamed Land Cruiser in 1954, when it was first mass-produced, rather than built to order. A single year later, its original 85 horsepower diesel was replaced by a 125 horsepower 3.8 liter gas engine. A diesel version, normally around 3 liters, would be sold in Japanese Land Cruisers for most years, though never in the US.
