The Toyota Corolla is a compact car produced by Toyota of Japan and is known worldwide for its reliability, conventional engineering and low fuel consumption. In 1997, the Corolla became the best selling nameplate in the world. Toyota has sold over 35 million Corollas since its launch in 1966, making it the best selling car of all time. Within Toyota's current inventory line-up of American cars, only the Land Cruiser is an older name than the Corolla.

The 2008 Toyota Corolla earned five stars in head on collision crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and four stars in side on collision tests. The Corolla has an evenly shaped body, with both the trunk and belt lines matching each other. Its doors open quite wide making it easy for passengers to enter and exit the car. The insides of the car are elegant and do not give it a cheap feeling like some of the other small cars do. It may be a little cramped for very tall or fat people, but people who are not very tall will fit in comfortably. There’s plenty of leg and hip room for people who are not very tall to fit into the back seat.

The third-generation Toyota Corolla, built from 1974 to 1979 (worldwide versions) (KE3x/KE5x), marked Toyota's greatest growth in the United States in the wake of the fuel crisis. In addition to the Sprinter, there was a redesigned-body version built by Toyota affiliate Daihatsu, called the Daihatsu Charmant. While there were certain fourth-generation models with a longer model life, this generation, when considered as a whole, was the longest-lived one, possibly due to the worldwide recession in the 1970s. A large range of cars were built using this chassis, including Corollas, Sprinters, Daihatsu, and the sporty Levin and Trueno models with the DOHC motor.

In NHTSA crash tests, the Toyota Corolla earned five stars (the best score possible) for frontal-impact protection and four stars for side-impact protection. In 40 mph frontal-offset crash testing by the IIHS, it received a "Good" rating (the highest possible). The IIHS gave a worst rating of "Poor" to the Corolla for the car's protection in side-impact crashes. That rating rises to "Acceptable" if the car is equipped with the optional side and side curtain airbags.
