1. South Carolina -- North Carolina
   The University of South Carolina was a member of the Southern Conference for men's basketball and football from 1922 until it became a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953. The Gamecocks... left the ACC in 1971 after many disputes over the ACC's recruiting regulations and the political dominance of the conference's four North Carolina schools. USC then competed as an independent until 1983 when it joined the Metro Conference for all sports except football and men's soccer. In 1991, the Gamecocks joined the Southeastern Conference when it increased its membership to 12 schools and split into two divisions, adding the University of Arkansas to its Western Division and the University of South Carolina to its Eastern Division. Men's soccer continued to compete as an independent since the SEC does not sponsor men's soccer, but joined the Metro Conference for the 1993 and 1994 seasons and has competed in Conference USA since 2005. 2. Wachovia -- North Carolina
   Wachovia (pronounced wa-KO-vee-yah) is the Latin form of the name Wachau, which was given to the tract of land in the Piedmont region of North Carolina settled by Moravians in 1753. The name honored the settlers' connections to the Wachau Valley along the Danube River.
3. Thelonious Monk -- North Carolina
   The jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk is usually remembered as a hip New Yorker. He was a pioneer of Bebop who lived most of his life on Manhattan's West Side. But Monk was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and raised by his mother, a native of that tobacco and railroad town. Monk's son and the writer Alan Gurganus, among others, reflect on Monk's often-neglected Southern roots -- and, by extension, those of many other jazz greats.
4. Charlie Sifford -- North Carolina
   A black caddie from a poor family in Charlotte, North Carolina, Charlie Sifford dared to play professional golf with white men. It was not a friendly game for Charlie. He endured open heckling, insults and who knows what else.
5. Ronnie Milsap -- North Carolina
   In the early \'90s, Milsap\'s commercial appeal began to decline -- after 1992, he wasn\'t able to break into the country Top Ten. Nevertheless, he continued to record. In 1992, he left RCA and signed to Liberty, where he recorded True Believer, which failed to yield any major hits. 6. Maya Angelou -- North Carolina
   Angelou moved to New York, where she later began to study under Pearl Primus. Angelou’s success grew from her casting in Porgy and Bess, which toured in Africa and Europe. Upon returning to America, she co-wrote Caberet for Freedom, with Godfrey Cambridge, at a fund-raiser for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Angelou served as the northern coordinator for the SCLC for a year.
7. Elon University -- North Carolina
   Elon University is a dynamic private comprehensive university known for excellent arts and sciences programs, as well as outstanding professional programs. Elon is located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, east of Greensboro and northwest of Raleigh/Durham. Founded by the Christian Church (now the United Church of Christ) in 1889, Elon's 4,700 undergraduate and 250 graduate students come from 44 states. Elon is recognized as a national leader in engaged learning, with top ratings in the National Survey of Student Engagement.
8. North Carolina Health Insurance -- States
   North Carolina Consumers Will Soon Have Options for Health Insurance (Sep 05, 2006) - WellPath Select is a subsidiary of Coventry Health Care and will soon be marketing an individual health insruance product to residents of North Carolina. With increased competition, many residents of the state are hoping that they will see a future reduction in their premiums.
9. Guster -- Tours
   In Fall 2007, Guster is headlining the Crocs Next Step Campus Tour with Brett Dennen as a support act. The tour will promote eco-friendly “green” initiatives while educating attendees on ways to help the environment. The tour will be stopping at fifteen colleges including Michigan State University, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Vermont, the University of Florida, and Vanderbilt University.
10. Eartha Kitt -- South Carolina
    Eartha Kitt frequently stood up against what she perceived as wrong, and took the consequences when they followed. She made Lady Bird Johnson cry at luncheon at the White House by speaking out against the Vietnam war. She was "blacklisted" and was not able to find work for approximately eleven years in the United States (p.249). She was investigated by the FBI and the CIA. Her CIA files contained this excerpt describing her as: "a sadistic, sex nymphomaniac...rude, crude, shrewd, difficult...one of six children...mother and father farmers in South Carolina...ranaway from home at the age of sixteen...would do anything to get attention..." (p.240).
