The motion of a Total Gym is smoother than Bowflex and Weider's Crossbow but does not provide the uniform resistance and complete workout of a weight-stack machine. For anyone who has been in a gym before, these machines take some serious getting used to. Yet even when you are comfortable with the motion, you'll see that it still does not provide as effective a workout.

Front press on the Total Gym 1000 Overall, think of the Total Gym as another tool that can be used. It certainly isn’t better (or worse) than any other form of resistance exercise, but very good at what it does. The only point I’d make on the range available is that many of the optional extras seem quite pointless to me; such as the extra hooks, cables, pins and plates (yes, you can add weight plates to them - but if you really want to lift weights, why start with a Total Gym?). Grab one of the simpler models (usually the lower numbers - which are changing all the time). You’ll be surprised.
While many home gyms have 8 to 10 levels of resistance the Total Trainer 4000XL Home Gym has 11 levels of resistance that will take your workout to the max. The 4000XL is loaded with attachments and is equipped with the Super Tuff TPU 90AE roller and axle system. These attachments turn your 4000XL Home Gym into a multi station gym workout. The glide board on the 4000XL is 4'' inches longer than the DLX making it a total of 46'' inches in length.

Total Trainer Resistance Formula The principle behind the Total Trainer home gym is to use your own body weight on a moving board as the resistance. So, you are actually exercising directly against your own body weight. The resistance varies with the angle of the Glide Board Selecting various heights on the Resistance Rail for the different exercises represents a varying percentage of your body weight, from light on the lower levels to very heavy on the top levels. To increase the resistance further optional Weights can be added to the optional Power Bar. Up to 100 lbs. (50 lbs. each side) can be added to the Power Bar.
