Observing a lunar eclipse is totally safe, and requires no special equipment other than a chair, blanket and snacks. Binoculars or a telescope will, of course, enhance the view, but aren't essential.

A partial phase will begin at 8:43 p.m. The total eclipse, which is the darkest phase, will start just after 10 p.m. and last until shortly before 11. The whole thing will be over soon after midnight.
