The Desert Tortoise t is one of 4 species of the genus Gopherus, known collectively as gopher tortoises. Gopher tortoises are characterized by brown shells 8-15inches long with flattened front limbs adapted for burrowing.

Sulcata Tortoises are the largest continental land tortoise, they will grow to over 2 feet in length and can weigh over 100 lbs. Needless to say, this "little" guy needs a lot of space!

The dubwise deconstruction and fragmented Kraut-rock of Millions Now Living Will Never Die roused a generation of beat-crazy bedroom polymaths like Four Tet and Prefuse 73. But on their third album, TNT, Tortoise honed in on the Mingus-DJ Premier- and-Aphex Twin-inna-Wicker Park-loft aesthetic of 1995's "Cliff Dweller Society" B-side. Their worldview crystallized and the backlash began. No matter. By their last album, Standards, they could kick out a post-American jam called "Seneca," spitting allusions to Marley, Sonny Sharrock, and DJ Shadow's remix of DJ Krush's track with the Roots' Black Thought, "Meiso."

The Tortoise were founded in 442 after the Battle of White Stag and Battle of Raging Seas. The Emperor Hantei Muhaki assumed the throne after the death of his niece, Hantei Yugozohime who was killed by the gaijin during the battle of White Stag. He bestowed minor clan status on Agasha Kasuga and his followers despite the fact that they apparently helped the gaijin leaders to escape from Otosan Uchi. To this date the reasons for the Emperor granting this status are known only to Kasuga and Muhaki.

In recent years Desert Tortoise of the Mojave Desert is federally listed as a threatened species. State and federal wildlife and land management agencies and local jurisdictions are actively involved in conservation programs to help the recovery of the Desert Tortoise throughout the Mojave Desert.
