Toontown: Disney Online
built 495 days ago
Since its 2003 launch, Toontown users have paid a monthly subscription fee of $9.95 (after a free trial)– though a free public beta was launched late in May. Apparently the free beta was a useful draw– Disney execs said they noticed increased user response, and Disney now says it’s talking to advertisers in preparation for the launch of an entirely ad-supported version of Toontown.

Toontown is available for download at www.toontown.com for $9.95 per month. It is ... available as a subscription gift card with a CD Rom at DisneyStore.com and major retailers nationwide. Longer-term memberships are available at reduced rates and, for consumers who prefer to try before they buy, there is a 3-day free trial period available at www.toontown.com.
Since this is an online world where kids and adults interact, Disney implemented several unique features in Toontown to keep children safe from inappropriate conversations or behavior. First and foremost, there is no open, uncensored chat in the game. Most players communicate with each other entirely via "SpeedChat" — a pre-defined, safe list of phrases that are accessed via a series of drop-down menus. The menus are designed to cover most communication needs (plus several silly phrases), but players can add additional SpeedChat phrases to their menu by purchasing them from the Cattlelog.
In addition, the new online account management tools available with the re-launched site allow users to manage their Toontown subscriptions more easily. Payment and purchase screens have been completely redesigned to be more intuitive and to provide greater support online for easier and faster customer service.

Doodles are available now for adoption in exchange for jellybeans, the currency of Toontown online. They can be found at newly unveiled Pet Shops located in each of the Toontown neighborhood playgrounds.
Up to now, Mac users haven’t had access to Toontown Online — it’s been for PC users only. System requirements call for a 450MHz or faster PowerPC-based Mac or any Intel-based Mac, 256MB RAM, 300MB hard disk space, 32MB graphics system, 56K or faster Internet connection, Mac OS X v10.4 or later and Safari.
