The regulation Tony Lema Course is wide open, and there are only a few trees that can affect your shots. The undulating greens are medium in size and slow in speed. There are scenic views of the San Francisco Bay that accompany the golfer all around the Lema Course. Afternoon breezes off the bay make the golfer feel they are playing a traditional links-style course. The Marina Course has two par 4's and is known for its extremely tight conditions, character and charm.

Along with Palmer and 1964 Open winner Tony Lema, a young Jack Nicklaus had ... begun to stroll golf’s international stage, finishing third to Bob Charles in 1963 and second to Lema in ’64. It seemed only a matter of time before the Ohio phenom would make his British Open breakthrough.

The finished rework, rechristened the Tony Lema Course at Monarch Bay, is laid out in two loops, with seven tees per hole (including an unlisted junior tee) making the course playable for all. The starting and finishing holes, as well as Nine through Eleven, are routed through stands of eucalyptus and pine. As golfers cross over the Estudillo Channel, the trees disappear, and the course takes on an undeniably Scottish flair.

At the 8th Thomson was three strokes up but by the 14th, he had lost two of these and Lema was just one behind. At the 16th, Lema missed a vital birdie putt, which would have given him a share of the lead. At the 17th he had a disappointing bogey and Thomson was now two strokes up with two holes left to play. At the 18th both players hit excellent tee shots, but while Thomson’s second shot landed in the centre of the green, Lema’s wayward shot found a bunker. He could not recover and eventually took six for the hole. Thomson had a final par 4 to complete his round in 71, and won the Championship with a total aggregate of 285, two shots ahead of Huggett and O’Connor.
