Freedom to Play Your Way: Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground players have unprecedented control of their skating experience. They can mold and shape their character ... they choose – the choices made and the paths travelled determine how their Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground character evolves. As Proving Ground gamers progress, they develop into any combination of three skater classes, acquiring attributes and skills of a contest-winning Career Athlete, a fast and furious Hardcore Skater or a creative maverick Rigger, who alters and modifies the world as a giant skatepark.

Before Tony Hawk started skateboarding, he was a bit of a spaz who got frustrated with himself quite a bit. After striking out in a baseball game, Tony was so mad at himself that he ran away and hid in a ravine and had to be coaxed out by his dad. His parents had a psychologist at Tony's school examine him. The results showed Tony Hawk was "gifted" and had a 12 year-old mind trapped in an eight year-old body. Tony started channeling his "gifted" abilities into skateboarding. Tony Hawk turned pro at the age of 14 and by 16 he was winning just about every skateboard contest he entered.

Retired skateboard legend Tony Hawk earned the top TRU*Score (46), narrowly beating Shaquille O'Neal (45) and James (44). (Jordan was not included on the list of 63 athletes for the TRU*Score ratings.) As TRU has noted, teens today respect those athletes who have changed the game.

Unlike past Tony Hawk's games, Proving Ground breaks its singleplayer down into three different styles. You'll still create and outfit your character as you choose, but from there you'll be taken through different types of gameplay by Proving Ground's pro cast.

Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam boasts cartoon graphics and not as much detail compared to last year’s Project 8. You’ll feel the rush and notice the sharp character models, but don’t expect the levels to share those impressive characteristics. Like the gameplay types and their lack of depth within, the levels are full of variety and not enough substance. All of the downhill environments are full of unique twists and turns and worthwhile passageways. But, besides scattering pigeons and breakable street vendor setups, these visuals are no richer than what we’ve seen in Crazy Taxi.
