built 642 days ago
As you have probably read by now, Tony Blair is going to announce that British troops have a timetable to begin leaving Iraq. Some by the end of this year, all by the end of 2008.

Yesterday, Tony Blair appeared before the European Parliament to outline his priorities for the UK’s presidency of the European Council, which starts on 1 July. His speech was excellent (the full text is here) and he maintained a refreshingly positive tone. The British presidency will be a great opportunity to address current challenges in the EU.
The Prime Minister of England, Tony Blair, made thinly veiled threats against Iran unless the hostages are released. Iran captured 15 British sailors who were conducting lawful boarding operations in Iraqi waters.
Among the pro-European majority that lives on the other side of the Channel, Tony Blair is regarded with envy and disappointment. Envy because in spite of everything he is still seen as the most talented and charismatic of European leaders of his time. Like many notable leaders at the end of their term he is more admired abroad than at home. Disappointment because they had hoped for more from the most pro-European British leader anyone will see for some time. And yet both Britain and Europe are different because of Blair, and, in spite of the disappointment, both are the better for him.
The achievements of the British economic policy during Mr. Blair's stay in the office can be viewed as the trump card of the prime minister. Tony Blair managed to prove that liberal schemes, which do not enjoy much popularity in Continental Europe, can be rather efficient. One may recollect the now-forgotten decisions, which were made in Lisbon in 2000. The decisions were meant to intensify the development of scientific branches of the European economy to make the EU a competitive international organization in global scale. The head of the British government will most likely draw his colleagues' attention to those suggestions again. In other words, Great Britain will aim its efforts to liberalize European economic policies during the forthcoming six months of its EU chairmanship.
