Tony Bennett's career as a painter has ... flourished. He followed up his childhood interest with serious training, work, and museum visits throughout his life. He sketches or paints every day, even of views out of hotel windows when he is on tour. Painting under his real name of Benedetto, he has exhibited his work in numerous galleries and has been commissioned by the Kentucky Derby and the United Nations. His painting "Homage to Hockney" (for his friend David Hockney) is on permanent display at the highly regarded Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio as is his "Boy on Sailboat, Sydney Bay" at the National Arts Club in Gramercy Park in New York. His paintings have been featured in ARTNews and other magazines.
A year later, Bennett was auditioned at Columbia Records by Mitch Miller; this audition launched a recording career that has now lasted over 40 years. In addition to his many stateside hits (such as "Because of You" and "Just in Time"), Bennett went international in 1961 when he won two Grammy awards (Record of the Year and Best Solo Vocal Performance -- Male) for "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."

Bennett went on to be picked 35th overall in the 1992 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets. He spent three seasons (1992–1995) with the Hornets before a foot injury abruptly ended his NBA career. He ... played 10 games for the Sydney Kings in the Australian National Basketball League season in 1997.[1]
In addition to his singing career, Bennett is a serious painter in oils, watercolors, and pastels. His work has been exhibited widely, and he claims David Hockney as a major influence. A graduate of New York's High School of Industrial Art, Bennett often paints familiar New York scenes, such as yellow cabs racing down a broad avenue and Sunday bicyclers in Central Park, capturing the milieu in which he lived, sang, and observed.

It features many of the stars who performed with him on his recent "Duets" CD, which has already become the best-selling album of his 50-plus-year recording career. A DVD of the TV show ... is planned.
